Samuel Hutchinson, founder and president of St. Louis-based Interface Construction Corporation has been elected to serve as the Associated General Contractors of America treasurer. Hutchinson becomes the third St. Louisan elected to the executive board of the national organization, following Gabe Alberici and Bob Elsperman who previously served in this national office. As a member of the board, Hutchinson will lead a national effort to improve the productivity of the nation’s construction companies, oversee the group’s advocacy efforts on behalf of the industry and help builders weather today’s challenging economic conditions.
“We are very pleased to have such a distinguished St. Louis businessman playing such a major role in the leadership of the national organization” said Leonard Toenjes, president, AGC of St. Louis. “Sam brings integrity and leadership to the job,” added Toenjes.
Interface began as a concrete construction company, completing concrete flatwork for highway contractors in the Metro East area of St. Louis. In 1988, Hutchinson transitioned the company from being a subcontractor to a general contractor and a construction manager in heavy construction, earning Interface the title of one of the top 25 small businesses in the St. Louis area. Hutchinson has served as chairman of AGC’s Building Division and is a four-time member of the executive board.
Simultaneously while serving in the position of AGC treasurer, Hutchinson will chair the task force on Disadvantaged Business Enterprise, a job he has held before for the AGC of America, “ As a minority-owned contractor I learned the meaning and value of good construction management and what it takes to make a business successful” said Hutchinson. “I hope to assist other minority firms onto the path to success.”
AGC is the largest and oldest national construction trade association in the United States, and represents more than 33,000 firms nationwide, including 7,500 general contractors, and more than 12,500 specialty-contracting firms.
The Associated General Contractors of St. Louis is the united voice of the area’s construction industry, representing
more than 450 area construction firms.
