Haberberger Inc. and Kaiser Electric recently completed work on the Village East Dormitory for Washington University. The new four-story apartment-style dormitory is located on the university's Danforth Campus houses 39 suites with a total of 148 bedrooms. The three- and four-bedroom apartments each contain a kitchen and living room. Six of the units, two on each floor, are designed to meet ADA requirements. The building also has a laundry facility.
Contracted by BSI, Haberberger was in charge of installing 60 air handling and fan coil units, a 700-ton chiller, a cooling tower and underground site utilities for the dorm. Installing the chiller proved to be a difficult aspect of the project as the team had to disassemble the chiller into three major pieces before it could be lowered by a crane into a sub-grade garage and carted to the chiller room. Each piece of the chiller was then lowered another six feet onto its concrete pad and reassembled by Haberberger's crew.
Kaiser Electric's crews installed the building's main electrical systems, as well as provided conduit stubs and rough-ins for the facility's telephone wiring and computer cabling. The state-of-the-art facility has multiple computer outlets in each suite and LEED certified compact fluorescent lighting on the exterior of the building and the entryway to reduce energy consumption.
Construction began in May 2007 and was completed in July 2008, on budget and on schedule. The general contractor on the project was BSI Constructors, Inc. of St. Louis and the architect was Mackey Mitchell Associates of St. Louis. JEN Mechanical and Premier also worked with Haberberger on the project team.
