"Our company goal is to reduce every type of consumption," said Tony Lesley, construction project manager for Whole Foods Market. "And if that means spending additional money to determine how much energy is being consumed in order to make our stores more environmentally friendly, then that is what we are going to do."
Brian Litteken, Kaiser Electric project manager, said the wiring for the energy management system was unique, because wiring for all of the store's systems had to be tied together at a single board in the main electric room. Start up of all the systems also had to be done simultaneously as a result of the unique system and its wiring.
"With traditional wiring jobs, you would have a local thermostat for each rooftop unit which would monitor the temperature in that area and control the unit independently of the other rooftop units," said Litteken. "But with the energy management system, all the rooftop units are tied together with a communication cable and controlled by temperature sensors in the unit and on the sales floor."
Construction on the new store began in November 2007, with Kaiser Electric selected as the electrical contractor on the project. The general contractor on the project was Kansas City, MO-based Luke Draily Construction and the designer was WD Partners based in Ohio. The store opened in June 2008.
Remote-Controlled Market
Kaiser Electric has completed the wiring of a new Whole Foods Market in Town & Country, MO. The complex wiring system for the 55,000-square-foot natural and organic grocery store includes an energy management system that lets the supermarket chain monitor energy use on an hourly basis and control the store's lighting, refrigeration, and HVAC systems from its regional office in Chicago.
