The City of O’Fallon, Illinois’, new State and Obernuefemann roundabout, designed by Horner & Shifrin, recently received two prominent awards. The American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois recognized the project with a Merit Award, which is given, “for those projects worthy of recognition for the engineer and the owner/client.” Also, the Illinois Department of Transportation has honored the project with its Small Construction Project Award.
This roundabout addresses several key benefits to motorists and residents of O’Fallon, Horner & Shifrin said. First, it alleviates much of the congestion that has plagued the intersection for years, thereby shortening commute times and reducing the number of accidents. Second, it is safer than an intersection that is regulated by traffic signals or stop signs. Finally, it reduces air pollution since vehicles no longer sit idling as they wait to enter the intersection.
Steve Donahue, Horner & Shifrin Project Manager said, “It is always our goal to design projects that not only enhance the safety and convenience of the traveling public, but benefit the environment as well. I am pleased by the fact that air emissions will be reduced as a result of the virtual elimination of vehicles idling at this intersection.”
