McCarthy/KWAME Provide CM for $13 Million U City School

McCarthy/KWAME, a joint venture of Kwame Building Group and McCarthy, has begun construction management services on the new $13 million Barbara C. Jordan Elementary School in University City.

The new Barbara C. Jordan Elementary School replaces an existing school in the University City School District near St. Louis. Demolition of the existing school building began in September. Construction of the new school will be completed in February 2011. The architect is Bond-Wolfe.

The new two-story, 64,834-square-foot school will feature 24 classrooms including several specialized classrooms and specialty spaces that will enable students to do more exploratory work and self-discovery. The school will open with 385 students with the capacity to accommodate up to 500 students.

Several architectural features were recycled from the old building and are being placed into the new facility to enhance the intimate feel of the school, including mosaic tiles from around water fountains, an entryway tile mural and a freestanding masonry memorial bench.

“The new school building will provide a better learning environment through improved day lighting, air quality and technology accommodations,” said Kevin Ferguson, KWAME vice president. “The eco-friendly aspects of this facility also will serve as a working lab for teachers and students to learn more about the environment and green sustainability.” The Barbara C. Jordan Elementary School will be built seeking a LEED certification.
