Kwame Building Group (KWAME) has completed work on a new $15 million freshman residence hall and dining facility at Harris-Stowe State University in St. Louis. A ceremony was held August 12 to dedicate the new building in honor of former St. Louis Mayor Freeman Bosley, Jr., a longtime advocate of the university and the first African-American mayor of St. Louis.
KWAME managed the yearlong construction project and currently serves as program manager for all Harris-Stowe capital improvement projects. Grice Group Architects and Trivers Associates Architects provided architectural services. K&S Associates was the general contractor.
"This project represents the final phase in the transformation of our university," said Henry Givens, outgoing president of Harris-Stowe. "Our new residence hall and dining facility will give students a well-rounded college experience, allowing them to participate in leadership activities, develop life-long friendships and focus on earning a college degree without ever leaving our campus."
The new, four-story environmentally friendly residence hall will house up to 200 students in single- and double-bedroom suites with furnished living rooms, kitchenettes, dining areas and private bathrooms. Every floor includes a lounge and two quiet study rooms in each wing. Other building amenities include a cardio fitness room, laundry facility, mailboxes, community kitchen, 24-hour vending and a public safety office, all located on the ground floor.
The new state-of-the-art campus dining facility will serve students from both residence halls with seating for 300, a private meeting room and an outdoor patio.
