KAI Design & Build has been selected as the construction consultant/project manager on an estimated $6 million addition and renovation project at the Webster Groves Public Library.
Designs for the project provided by St. Louis-based architects Powers Bowersox Associates, Inc. are underway, with construction expected to begin in October and be completed within 12 months. A general contractor for the project has not yet been selected.
KAI Design & Build is responsible for monitoring the construction
process and representing the Webster Groves Municipal Library District
in matters relating to the project’s design, scheduling, planning and
overall construction quality.
Plans for updating the library,
located at 301 East Lockwood Ave., include constructing a
7,500-square-foot addition and centralized two-story atrium to serve as
an art gallery and public gathering space; plus restoring and enhancing
the original 8,800-square-foot, 59-year-old building.
The facility’s existing main reading
room will remain the heart of Webster Groves Public Library. Proposed
plans for the reading room include expanding the circulation desk and
replacing its existing vaulted ceiling with a floating sound-absorbent
ceiling, plus refinishing the space’s existing tables.
Plans
also call for increasing the number of shelves in the main stack area
and updating staff areas to meet the demands of a modern library. The
design of the addition will make use of large windows and glass to
create an open feel and utilize natural sunlight.
