The St. Louis County Economic Council was recently awarded the 2010 American Planning Association, St. Louis Metro Section (APA SLMS) Plan award for the Jefferson Barracks Master Plan.
The plan, created by Woolpert, redesigned the historic barracks as a regional and national visitor attraction. The redesign includes a Museum District around the barracks parade ground and includes future investments at the four entrances to the barracks, along the travel corridors of the complex, and within downtown Lemay. Along with recognizing the significant history of the area, the new Museum District will also create job opportunities for some of the workers affected by the impacts of the Base Realignment and Closing (BRAC) in the St. Louis, Missouri, region.
The Economic Council and Woolpert unveiled the 3D, fly-around model and artist renderings at a public open house with more than 150 political, business and neighborhood leaders in attendance. "This award reinforces the importance of this project for the St. Louis region," said Dave Rickard, Director of Design Services at Woolpert. "The public interest and support for the plan has already begun to have a positive impact on the region. We're very proud to have been a part of this project, and can't wait to see the plan implemented."
The APA SLMS Plan Award recognizes the significant advancements of planning in the St. Louis metropolitan region. The judging panel considered several factors in determining the winner, including the originality, quality, community support and effectiveness of the plans. The APA SLMS recognized the award recipients at their Planning Workshop at the Powder Valley Nature Conservation Center on March 29.
