Families with children who are patients at St. John's Mercy Medical Center now have a new place to take a shower, do some laundry or catch up on their email -- all while remaining just steps away from their young loved ones.
On July 19 the new Ronald McDonald Family Room at St. John's officially opened its doors. Located on the third floor of the new St. John's Mercy Children's Hospital, the 1,500-square-foot center is designed to serve families of youngsters in the adjacent Pediatrics unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. It replaces the original Ronald McDonald Family Room located on the seventh floor of the main hospital. The room is being moved to be closer to the pediatric population which has moved to the new tower as well.
"Our family rooms allow us to provide the comforts and care of our traditional Ronald McDonald houses right inside the hospital," says Dan Harbaugh, president of Ronald McDonald Charities of Metro St. Louis, Inc. "They provide a much-needed break to families who want to stay close to their children."
The new St. John's Ronald McDonald Family Room provides families access to a fully equipped kitchen, TV and play areas, two large bathrooms with showers,
two computer nooks, a quiet area and laundry facilities. ISC Contracting, whose employees donate as many as 400 hours of time each year to perform maintenance and repairs on Ronald McDonald Charities houses, served as general contractor for its construction. The firm also solicited donations of time and materials from local subcontractors and suppliers to help keep project costs down.
"There's no company like ISC in the construction industry," said Harbaugh. "They are totally first class, totally professional, totally responsible for making sure our needs are met," said Harbaugh. ISC previously served as general contractor on the original St. John's Ronald McDonald Family Room, which was completed in April 2005, as well as similar rooms at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital and St. Louis Children's Hospital.
