H&S Helps St. Gen Improve Wastewater Plant

Horner & Shifrin, Inc., is designing improvements to Ste. Genevieve's wastewater treatment plant that will make it easier to treat wastewater during high-water events, and will extend the plant's useful life.

During wet weather conditions, the wastewater treatment plant flows are five to six times greater than during dry weather conditions, making it difficult to properly treat the wastewater. A new 450,000-gallon-capacity reinforced concrete flow equalization tank, which will employ a high-pressure water-cannon tank cleaning system, will allow the treatment plant operators to divert a significant amount of the flow to the tank during wet weather conditions. After wet weather conditions subside, the wastewater stored in the flow equalization tank will be pumped at a lower rate into the plant for treatment. The installation of new submersible pumps at Lift Station No. 1 will allow the operator to better control the rate of flow from the lift station into the treatment plant.

According to John Lauth, Horner & Shifrin's project manager, "Our primary goals involve maintaining operations of the existing Lift Station No. 1 and the wastewater treatment plant while the improvements are being constructed, and optimizing the new facilities to provide cost-effective equipment and construction to fit the City's project budget. The updated facilities are being designed to meet current codes and Missouri Department of Natural Resources requirements."
