Horner & Shifrin has completed design plans for the reconstruction of the I-270 and Illinois Route 3 interchange in Granite City, IL to improve traffic flow and safety while being compatible with the proposed Chain of Rocks bridge replacement currently being designed by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The design also will also save money for the Department by eliminating unnecessary future reconstruction when the proposed Chain of Rocks bridge replacement is connected to the improved interchange.
The project involved the reconstruction of the existing cloverleaf interchange just east of the I-270 bridge over the Chain of Rocks canal to allow the loop ramps on the west side of the interchange to be removed. A very tight three-and-one-half-month time frame was required so that the project could be constructed using Accelerated Construction Program (ACP) funds in the 2010 construction season.
"Our staff rose to the occasion on this project," Steve Donahue, H&S project manager said. "They were presented with an imposing challenge and did what it took to get the job done."
