St. Louis union electricians and electrical contractors, who are among those most hurt by job losses in the manufacturing sector, are now shaping a new economic future in the renewable energy industry. The Electrical Industry Training Center, located at 2300 Hampton Ave., recently unveiled a revised curriculum with an emphasis on “green” training. The training will prepare the region’s future workforce in manufacturing and installing solar cells, lithium ion batteries, wind turbines, fuel cells and other kinds of renewable energy.
According to the Renewable Energy Policy Project , efforts to rein in Missouri’s carbon emissions have the potential to generate more than 22,000 manufacturing jobs in wind, solar, geothermal and biomass industries.
As a result, The Electrical Connection has been cultivating these types of industries to create a new manufacturing base, generating jobs for its members. The Electrical Connection is a partnership of St. Louis Chapter, National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local One. The organizations operate the Electrical Industry Training Center.
