Clayco Inc. has begun construction of a new $64 million residence hall on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus.
The project is the third phase of a comprehensive program involving the replacement of six residence halls, unofficially known as the "Six Pack," and the construction of a new dining and residential programs building. Clayco will serve as the Construction Manager for the new five-story, 180,000-square-foot facility that is being built between Scott Hall and Hopkins Hall. The demolition of adjacent Forbes Hall is also part of the project, as are the relocation of site utilities and the extension of central utilities.
The multi-phase program is being conducted to form the Stanley O. Ikenberry Commons at the University, with the purpose of transforming the area into a more modern, neighborhood-style student environment.
The 483-bed residence hall will have a masonry façade and feature rooms that provide space and privacy for the students, while continuing to foster a sense of community. In addition to double and single suite units, the hall will include floor lounges, public meeting spaces, and offices for student services.
This is the first large-scale project for the University that meets its new Minority and Female Business Enterprise (MAFBE) participation goals, which were recently increased from a minimum of four to 15 percent. "As demonstrated by our ability to meet this admirable standard, Clayco is committed to helping minority and women-owned contractors to gain access to procurement opportunities," said Street.
Clayco is also working closely with the University and its construction partners for maximum sustainability and energy efficiencies, and will pursue LEED Silver, potentially LEED Gold, certification by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
Construction began on the facility in May 2011 and is expected to be completed in June 2013.
