Downtown St. Louis can claim home to one of the top designed public spaces in the world. The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) announced the winners of their 2011 Professional Awards today, and St. Louis' Citygarden earned an Honor Award in General Design - one of the highest awards in landscape architecture and design.
"The influence of this project has gone way beyond its boundaries. St. Louis is serious about the public realm and there is real excitement and enthusiasm about this public space across the country," said the awards jury. "This place really works and provides evidence that design matters."
Designed by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, Citygarden revitalizes the Gateway Mall in downtown St. Louis with an innovative three acre sculpture park. In addition to Citygarden, St. Louis also earned an Honor Award in Analysis and Planning for the South Grand Boulevard "Great Streets Initiative" project.
The jury of leading design experts considered 567 entries and selected 37 winners in the categories of General Design, Residential Design, Analysis and Planning, Communications, Research and the Landmark Award. In addition to the quality of the design, the jury also weighed the environmental sensitivity and sustainability of each project. The October issue of Landscape Architecture Magazine features the winning projects. Winners will be honored at the ASLA Annual Meeting and EXPO in San Diego on Wednesday, November 2.
