On Friday Aug. 19 the Carpenters District Council of St. Louis and Vicinity (CDC) will donate $100,000 to the Salvation Army for relief of Joplin tornado survivors.
The CDC began relief efforts immediately after the tornado, distributing food and drinks outside the Carpenters Local 311 union hall. Within days members of the CDC were raising money for Joplin. The union began raising funds from its members, carpenter locals, and contractors throughout the area with the promise that the CDC would match contributions dollar-for-dollar. In addition to the $100,000 raised by CDC, carpenter locals donated another $20,000 directly to to those displaced by the storm.
"This is what the Carpenters Union is all about — helping people," said Terry Nelson, executive secretary-treasurer of the CDC. "Typically we help people get better wages, benefits and working conditions, but it extends even further. When people are in need, we are there to help."
