The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) & Surgery Addition at
SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center received the 2009 Vista
Award – a national mark of distinction and honor, recognizing the
importance of teamwork in the healthcare design and building
environment. The award is granted by the American Society for
Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association
(AHA). The NICU & Surgery Addition is one of only three new
hospital projects in the country to be recognized this year with a
Vista Award. Alberici Constructors served as the project’s
construction manager and Christner served as the project’s architect.
The
project team used Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) and Lean
Construction techniques to deliver a specialized building that includes
ten operating rooms and a NICU with 60 private rooms. Teamwork led to
exceptional results in reducing cost and waste, adhering to the
schedule, and responding to a not-to-exceed budget of $59 million
For
example, the team conserved 40% of the original construction
contingency as an incentive pool. Savings – accrued through unusual
collaboration during design and construction – were shared by the
architect, constructor, engineer and major system subcontractors.
Partners to the leadership team for the SSM Cardinal Glennon NICU & Surgery project were: Owner:SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center; Architect: Christner Inc.; Contractor: Alberici Constructors; and Engineer: McGrath Incorporated Engineering.
